El Hayyay: God of my Life
Psalm 42:8 (NRSV) By day the Lord commands His Steadfast Love,
and at night His Song is with me,
a prayer to the God of my life.
Psalm 42:8 (NLT) But each day the Lord pours His Unfailing Love upon me,
and through each night I sing His Songs,
praying to God who gives me life.

Life is associated with light, gladness, fullness, order and activity
and is generally contrasted with darkness, sorrow, emptiness, chaos and
a silence that is characteristic of death and inanimateness.
Our life as a Christian is one of being brought out of darkness
into the Light of Christ by the Living God Who is El Hayyay—God of my life.
The Bible is full of references to life coming after death …
whether it refers metaphorically to being lifted out of the miry clay (Psalm 40:2)
or to having new life breathed into our spiritually dead bones (Ezekiel 37:5)
or to God’s Holy Spirit breathing life into us at Pentecost (Acts 2:4).

God is the Living God and has granted Jesus to have life in Him (John 5:26)
and to bring life to humanity (John 10:10).
Jesus is ‘the Bread of life,’ (John 6:48)
‘the Light of life,’ (John 8:12)
‘the Resurrection and the Life,’ (John 11:25)
‘the Way, and the Truth, and the Life’ (John 14:6).
We have life because we have chosen life IN Jesus Who is
the God of Life—El Hayyay.

Jehovah Rapha: God my Healer
Exodus 15:26 (NRSV) He said, “If you will listen carefully to the voice
of the Lord your God, and do what is right in his sight,
and give heed to his commandments and keep all his statutes,
I will not bring upon you any of the diseases that I brought upon the Egyptians;
for I am the Lord who heals you.”
Exodus 15:26b (The Message)  … I am God your healer.”

Jehovah Rapha is our God Who heals both individuals and nations.
He restores that which is broken and repairs that which needs reconstruction.
He is the Mender of broken hearts.
His Word always lays out the ‘conditions’ of His Blessings
toward us and He will often test us in everyday circumstances
to determine the level of our willing obedience to Him.
Yes! He is able to change our circumstances
but He would rather change us in the process!
Jehovah Rapha will always bring us to a refreshing oasis from time to time
but it is always simply a ‘stop along the Way’ (Psalm 23).
However, we do need to remember that we are pilgrims not residents!

Jehovah Rapha heals all our diseases (Psalm 103:3);
Jehovah Rapha heals the broken-hearted and binds their wounds (Psalm 147:3)
Like Aeneas we can hear Jehovah Rapha say Jesus Christ heals you! (Acts 9:34)
Be healed and rejoice in Jesus’ Name this day. Amen.

El Shaddai:
Almighty God—All Sufficient One
Exodus 6:2–3 (NRSV) God also spoke to Moses and said to him: “I am the Lord.
3 I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as God Almighty, …
Exodus 6:2–3 (The Message) … “I am God. 3 I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob
as The Strong God, …

God is the All-Sufficient Source of ALL blessings.
When God declares the Promise of blessings upon His People
there is also just a hint of His Power! Nothing is too big or too small for God
to place His Hand upon and impact the lives of individuals.
When we recall how faithfully He has been the ALL-Sufficient One in our lives,
how easy it is for us to lift our hands in praise and worship
of El Shaddai—Almighty God.

I worship You, Almighty God,
There is none like You.
I worship You, oh Prince of Peace,
That is what I long to do.
I give you praise, for You are my righteousness.
I worship You, Almighty God;
There is none like You.

El Olam: God of Eternity
Genesis 21:33 (NRSV)  Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beer-sheba, and called there on the name of the Lord, the Everlasting God.
Genesis 21:33 (The Message) Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beer-sheba and
worshiped God there, praying to the Eternal God.
Genesis 21:33 (NCV) Abraham planted a tamarisk tree at Beersheba and prayed to the Lord,
the God Who lives forever.
Genesis 21:33 (NAB)  Abraham planted a tamarisk at Beer-sheba,
and there he invoked by name the LORD,
God the Eternal.

Abraham calls upon the Name of God wherever he goes …
many of the Names of God are recorded in the story of Abraham.
God is the Beginning and the End for He is Eternal, Everlasting and throughout all time.
He is the Everlasting God.
This Name emphasizes God’s unchangeableness
and is connected with His inexhaustibleness thus
He gives strength to the weary.

Praise God today that He is El Olam—God of Eternity.
He knows you and loves you!
You know Him and love Him!

Misthapodotes:
Rewarder of Diligent Searchers

Hebrews 11:6 (NRSV) And without faith it is impossible to please God, f
or whoever would approach him must believe that he exists
and that He rewards those who seek Him.
Hebrews 11:6b (The Message) …anyone who wants to approach God
must believe both that he exists and that He cares enough
to respond to those who seek Him.

Our search for God is never fruitless or empty for His Word states
He rewards those who seek Him
/who earnestly and diligently search for Him
/who truly want to find Him.
He is both our Rewarder and our Very Great Reward.
Our seeking after Him is part of our ongoing and everlasting story.
He is not hiding Himself from us—He is simply waiting
to display yet another characteristic of His Beautiful Nature
as we continue on our path of spiritual maturity in Him.
As we find a newness of life IN Him,
Holy Spirit opens yet another door for us to enter
so that we can find MORE of Him!
What a Good and Gracious God we seek after … forever!

Rejoice!
He sings over you with delight!

Psalm 103:1 (NLT) — 1 Let all that I am praise the Lord; with my whole heart,
I will praise His Holy Name.
Psalm 105:3 (NLT) — 3 Exult in His Holy Name; rejoice, you who worship the Lord.

Isaiah 6:2–3 (NRSV) — 2 Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings:
with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet,
and with two they flew. 3 And one called to another and said:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His Glory.”

When I first became interested in the study of the Names of God,
I was inspired by the Scripture in Isaiah wherein the seraphs continually praised God.
I had a picture in my heart of these glorious creatures peeking out at God
through their wings, seeing a different facet of Him and then
sharing their discovery joyfully one with another.
It was almost like looking at a spinning disco ball
and seeing something different as the lights and movement
transfix one’s gaze.
That’s how this study has been for me over the years—
discovering something different of God’s Character and Nature and delighting in it.
In this Dailies series I am simply giving you a taste … there is more, so much more—
this is simply a simple beginning of a never-ending story …
our God is a Good, Great God … how unsearchable are His Ways …
but together we will seek to know Him better
through knowing more of His Names in His Word.

Elohim: God—Creator and Strong One
This term denotes majesty and intimates the Trinity. It is especially used to describe God’s Sovereignty and His Mighty Creative Works.
Isaiah 45:18 (NRSV) — 18 For thus says the Lord, who created the heavens (he is God!),
who formed the earth and made it
(he established it; he did not create it a chaos, he formed it to be inhabited!):
I am the Lord, and there is no other.
Isaiah 45:18 (The Message) — 18 God, Creator of the heavens— he is, remember, God.
Maker of earth— he put it on its foundations, built it from scratch.
He didn’t go to all that trouble to just leave it empty, nothing in it.
He made it to be lived in.
This God says: “I am God, the one and only.

Be blessed this day!

HaShem: the Name
Exodus 34:5 (NRSV) The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there,
and proclaimed the Name, “The Lord.”
The Message: God descended in the cloud and took up His Position there beside him
and called out the Name, God.
NLT: Then the Lord came down in a cloud and stood there with him;
and he called out His Own Name, Yahweh.

The Names of God used in the Bible act as a road map for learning about
the character of God. The Names He chooses in scripture are meant
to reveal His true nature to us.
Essential to our ability to glorify God is the knowledge of God
and knowing Him personally in view of that knowledge.
Giving glory to God is tied in with the knowledge of God (revelation of God),
and knowing God personally (response to God).

We know Who God is and what God is like,
not only by His perfections and works by His Names.
They tell us many things about God’s care and concern for us.
This is one of the fascinating studies of Scripture.
In this Dailies series we will explore just a few of God’s Names …
it just a taste of what has resulted in an ongoing research-joy for me
for the past 20 years! 😊
